RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County Health District reports that five additional mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The samples were collected near Longley Lane and South Rock Boulevard.

So far, there have not been any human cases of West Nile Virus reported to the Washoe County Health District. However, the positive test results make it clear that people should take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

Tips to avoid mosquitoes include:
– Wear long long sleeves and long pants if you are going out in the early mornings or evenings.
– Wear repellents containing DEET, picaradin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535.
– Check your window screens to make sure there are no holes or gaps that can let mosquitoes in.
– Make sure there is no standing water around your house. Even small puddles or containers with water will allow mosquitoes to breed.
– Vaccinate your horses for West Nile Virus.

You can find more information about the symptoms of West Nile Virus at the Centers for Disease Control.
