A new study has discovered that by following some simple heart health tips you could also be protecting yourself from dementia.
Study author Severine Sabia and her team found that by following 7 simple tips, you could also benefit your mind.
The team located at Inserm, a research institution affiliated with the University of Paris, found a link between American Heart Association’s heart guidelines or “life’s simple 7.”
These steps they discovered that might help prevent dementia, include,
Managing blood pressure.
2. Keeping down cholesterol.
3. Watching blood sugar levels.
4. Making sure to get in physical activity and exercise.
5. A healthy balanced diet.
6. Watching your weight.
7. Avoiding(never starting) or quitting smoking.
The study from the Department of Epidemiology of ageing and Neurodegenerative Diseases looked at how well people followed these steps at age 50. And then looked into the link with dementia over the next 25 years.
The study revealed that the closer participants adhered to the steps, the less likely they were to develop dementia later in life.
At the start of the study all participants were in perfect cardiovascular health and did not have dementia.
Over the follow-up period of 25 years, 347 of 7,899 participants developed dementia at an average age of 75 years old.
According to Medical news today, the researchers measured how well each participant adhered to the seven steps, using a three point scoring system for each of them.
While in the group with the lowest cardiovascular score, dementia occurred at the highest rate by a sizeable margin. Occuring at a rate of 3.2 cases per 1,000 person years.
The authors stated that their findings suggest that the “Life’s simple 7, which comprises the cardiovascular health score, at age 50 may shape the risk of dementia in a synergistic manner.”
The study also stressed the importance of this information, as each of the seven steps, are manageable, meaning the possibility of dementia becoming somewhat preventable.
