As summer comes to a close, health experts highlight fall allergy treatments

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – For some, the end of the Summer is a relief for their allergies, but for others the Fall is just the beginning.

A runny nose, itchy eyes, and scratchy throat can arrive as the days get shorter and the leaves begin to change. The Fall can especially be difficult for people who are sensitive to mold and ragweed pollen.

Treatment is different for everyone, but Gundersen Allergists say there are a few ways you can reduce your symptoms from home.

Dr. Todd Mahr, a Pediatric Allergist with Gundersen Health System suggests, “opening up the house is not a good thing if you have fall allergies. You should keep your windows closed, and use your air conditioning. Don’t hang bedding or clothing outdoors and then bring it inside. Wipe the dog before it comes back in from being outside, same way if you have long hair, and have been outside all day, you may want to shower at night.”

If taking over-the-counter medications for your symptoms, Allergists suggest taking anti-histamines like Allegra rather than ones that sedate, or make you sleepy like Benadryl.
