AVERAGING less than seven hours sleep a night more than doubles the risk of having a stroke – even if you top up your rest with an hour or more nap, researchers from Ningxia Medical University in China say. One theory is that short-sleepers are more prone to atrial fibrillation – an abnormal heart rate. This encourages blood to pool in the heart’s chambers, where it can clot. Fragments can then break off and travel to the brain, cutting off its blood supply and so causing stroke.
